AIM

1.1 million people are killed on the roads around the world every year and the statistics are getting worse. A key challenge across all countries is that road safety is reactive. Investments in safety countermeasures are based on historic crash data, in other words, people have to die before change is made. Our challenge was to help transport authorities adopt proactive strategies, tools, and technologies to ensure safer streets for all.

We used design strategy, systems thinking and interaction design to understand the needs of transport safety engineers. From this, we created AIM- a novel interactive data visualisation tool that supports the paradigm shift from reactive to proactive safety.

We used sensors and computer vision to detect near-misses, crashes that almost happened, and worked alongside data scientists to transform near-miss data into new indicators of risk. Together we designed intuitive visualisations and interactive maps that contextualise near-misses and accidents across road networks. This generates insights without injuries and supports traffic safety engineers to prioritise risks and design safety interventions before anyone has to get hurt.
