Avalon

Book cover illustration and design for the hardback of Nell Zink's 2022 novel, Avalon, published by Faber & Faber.

The approach focuses on a textured leaf illustration, a nod to the topiary practiced by the protagonist. The leaf takes occupies the main area of the cover, leaving little space for the type which gives the viewer a sense of growth. The illustration is paired with Commercial Type's Austin, along with a handwritten element.

The green is a vibrant Pantone ink, with black overprinted to give a sense of textured depth. The jacket is printed on a Matt Laminate, with a spot UV on the central illustration and spine.
