Bolands Mills, an iconic Dublin landmark, has undergone a major transformation into a vibrant, multi-purpose commercial, cultural, and community space, a placemaking initiative that has brought life, community, and footfall to an area where there was once very little. We worked closely with the client to develop a distinctive brand identity for the redeveloped destination, blending the site’s historic character with a clean and modern design aesthetic. We developed strategy and positioning for the brand that guided everything we did from identity design through to communication design. We researched everything about the historic site, as well as conducting interviews with locals and local historians, to get an authentic sense of the surrounding area. The keystone to all our branding work is the logo. The logo is inspired by the mill building’s iconic façade, instantly recognisable, adaptable across formats, and designed to maintain integrity in all applications. A versatile colour palette was developed that reflected both the heritage of the building (tones taken directly from the building signage) as well as more vivid tones that represented the regeneration of this site, the new and contemporary. We were very intentional to ensure optimal contrast, legibility, and consistency across print and digital platforms, aiming for the highest possible level of accessibility for all. Complementing this, we designed a unique suite of brand shapes inspired by local architecture, the Grand Canal Dock itself, and other area-specific forms. We made the intentional design decision to lean into the clash of old and new by using archival elements throughout the brand world, contrasting beautifully with the modern colour palette, as well as a contemporary suite of bespoke photography. These elements, together, serve as the building blocks of a cohesive visual system, enabling dynamic, structured layouts that strengthen brand recognition and celebrate local heritage. The result is a confident, flexible and place-specific brand world that communicates Bolands Mills’ identity with clarity and creativity across all touchpoints. We developed a fresh new brand identity, brought to life through brand guidelines, website, building signage and hoarding, social templates, photography and ongoing communication collateral.
