It is difficult to visit Christ Church Cathedral and not feel inspired. From the outset it was clear to us that the rich spiritual, cultural and visual heritage of the Cathedral was essential to its identity – and as designers we should apply respect and reverence in our approach.
We began our identity project with the restoration of the Capitular Seal, the signifying marque of Christ Church that dates back to the origins of the Cathedral over 800 years ago. The Seal had existed in numerous formats and designs – we commissioned a master craftsman to restore the Seal using wood-engraving methods that date back to the 1800s, providing unparalleled craft and detail.
An identity system was developed to provide clarity and consistency for communicating each strand of the Cathedral’s various activities – first and foremost as a place of worship – but also as a tourist attraction and centre for events.
