This limited-edition gin was crafted exclusively for Darkey Kelly’s pub on Fishamble Street by the skilled artisans at Lough Ree Distillery. Bringing with it a kick of flavour, its bespoke spiced blend pays tribute to Dorchas ‘Darkey’ Kelly, one of 18th century Dublin's most colourful characters.

We were engaged to create packaging that embodied the spirit of both this bustling bar and its namesake, who's chequered past includes sordid tales of betrayal, witchcraft and murder. Our aim was to weave her story into an illustrated tapestry, with symbolism invoking Irish folklore, magic, and the local area.

Drawing on the visual culture of the 18-century, woodcut prints served as inspiration for the illustration. Central to the design is a hand reaching out of the flames, symbolising Kelly’s tragic end. This is flanked by Celtic crosses and stone columns, reminiscent of the architecture in the surrounding area. The ivy represents magic, while primroses were once believed to connect our world with the next. At the base lie Kelly’s five unfortunate victims. An arch houses the central design and typography, echoing the distinctive archway that leads into Darkey Kelly’s pub.
