Brand identity system and website for Escape Route Films – a new film production company focused on supporting unique stories by emerging talent.
Escape Route Films, based in New York and founded by long-time film and television producer Jason De Beer, looks to support the creation of “handmade” and “deeply human” feature films. Central to the company’s ethos is a focus on emerging talent and bringing rarely told stories to life. De Beer describes the company’s vision as “attract(ing) viewers who appreciate films outside the mainstream—those who seek depth, authenticity, and innovative storytelling.” Escape Route Films launched in 2025 with a rolling open call for short film submissions from new and emerging writers and directors.
The brand identity system for Escape Route Films stems from a custom-drawn wordmark, inspired by the shape of 9.5mm film. The initial wordmark served as the starting point for several other design elements – the scene-framing visual system, the grid and layout structure for the brand website, and the ever-changing maze symbol, which recurs as a motif throughout the brand. As a company foregrounding authenticity and the handmade qualities of filmmaking, texture and subtle imperfections were sought out during the branding process and prioritised over gloss or perfection. The brand palette uses a rich brown color paired with a warm, newsprint-like off-white and vibrant red for expression. The brand typeface (Diatype Mono by Dinamo Typefaces) references the filmic qualities of scripts and aims to celebrate the essential role of the writer in bringing quality films to our screens.
