A confident, humane annual report that balances scientific authority with empathy, redefining expectations for medical reporting in Ireland.
The Background
Merrion Fertility Clinic is one of Ireland’s leading fertility centres and the country’s only not-for-profit fertility clinic. Transparency, trust and care sit at the heart of the organisation, reflected in its long-standing commitment to publishing detailed success rates within its annual report.
Medical reporting often defaults to dense, formal and impersonal communication. For the 2024 report, Merrion wanted a different approach. The challenge was to present rigorous clinical data with clarity and credibility, while also reflecting the compassion, partnership and humanity that define the patient experience. The report needed to function as a serious clinical document, but also as something people could connect with.
The Idea
The annual report was reimagined as an editorial publication rather than a conventional corporate or medical report. The central idea was to hold two qualities in balance: authority and empathy.
Instead of separating data from human experience, the report brings them into dialogue. Scientific outcomes, statistics and evidence are presented with confidence, while patient voices and lived experience are given equal weight. The aim was not to soften the science, but to contextualise it, reinforcing trust through openness, clarity and care.
Execution
Photography played a central role in resolving this balance. A bespoke shoot inside the clinic laboratories captured staff at work, highlighting precision, expertise and professionalism. These images are paired with more personal portraits and quieter human moments, creating a visual rhythm that communicates both credibility and compassion.
Content was structured with the same intent. Alongside clinical data and outcome reporting, patient quotes and a detailed patient journey are woven through the report. This ensures lived experience is not treated as an aside, but as a core component of the narrative.
Visually, the design draws on geometric motifs inspired by molecular forms, subtly referencing the science behind fertility treatment without becoming illustrative or literal. A calm, confident colour palette supports a flexible editorial grid, allowing layouts to shift in pace and emphasis. Image-led spreads are balanced with text-heavy sections, while generous white space and a considered typographic system ensure clarity and approachability.
Why it’s working
Balance: Scientific rigour and real human experience are held in clear, considered tension. Trust: Transparency is reinforced through the clear presentation of data and patient voice. Editorial clarity: An approach that makes complex medical information readable and engaging. Credibility: The report communicates authority without resorting to clinical coldness. Distinctiveness: A confident departure from standard medical reporting, setting Merrion apart within its sector.
