The design of the ‘Irish collection’ was commissioned by NearyNógs, Northern Ireland’s first bean to bar craft chocolate makers in Ireland. NearyNógs chocolate ethically source sustainable cacao beans, supporting the rainforest alliance and providing direct trade where possible. They pay above market value for cacao beans, to ensure that the cacao farmers get a living wage, ensuring survival of the cacao industry and the farmers’ livelihoods.

The brief was to create a look that was recognisably Irish, to stand out from their other ranges, while avoiding traditional tropes. We decided to take inspiration from local landscape, history, customs and language. We had previously designed their logo, also based on their unique coastal location, so had a clear direction in terms of where the client wanted to pitch the design.

It needed to have a premium feel, as well as one that was artisanal, to reflect that brand and its ethos. The typography was kept clean and minimal and the linocut illustrations were designed to portray a traditional folk quality associated with mythology and local lore.
