I worked with The Journal team to create a visual-led approach to their reporting on Ireland’s growing network of data centres. As a subject often difficult to visualise, they were looking to tell the story in a more compelling way — believing that a visual format would better communicate their scale, location, and impact. The challenge was to create an immersive experience for readers, in a way that elevated the editorial content.

The project was a close collaboration with the Investigative team and Niall O’Shea, Head of Design & Product. We approached it with an open mind, unsure of what the final format would be, but clear on what we wanted to say.

Through an iterative process, both the writing and the design approaches informed one another, evolving together to shape the final narrative and visual approach.

Central to bringing the story to life was the data behind it. The Investigative team had compiled detailed records of data centre locations, emissions licences and more, allowing me to visualise the information using 3D mapping software. I then designed and built the website, incorporating the maps as an interactive experience that guided readers on a journey through the article.

The launch of the article marked a successful milestone for The Journal in exploring visual storytelling through its platform.
