The Challenge

The merger of Science Foundation Ireland and the Irish Research Council called for a new identity that could bring two established organisations together under a single, credible banner. The challenge was to create a coherent brand system that balanced the needs of diverse stakeholders, including government, policy-makers and higher education institutions, while building trust, recognition and long-term cohesion across Ireland’s research landscape.

The Solution

A collaborative and iterative process led to the development of a flexible, story-driven identity that visualises research as a journey of curiosity, collaboration and exchange. The logo mark draws on three key influences. Irish insular script reflects Ireland’s historic role in the global spread of ideas. The agile anatomy of migratory birds symbolises persistence, focus and precision. The geometric clarity of circles and squares helps to simplify complex natural forms. Together, these elements create a distinctive and meaningful mark for an organisation that bridges the arts, humanities and sciences.

A bespoke typographic system supports both Irish and English naming, while a confident colour palette, led by deep green and vibrant lavender, ensures clarity, warmth and distinction across digital and physical applications.

The Result

The result is a minimal, contemporary identity that positions Research Ireland as the cornerstone of a connected and ambitious national research system. Designed to work seamlessly with partner brands and initiatives, the system is digital-first, adaptable and recognisable, with a strong narrative foundation that resonates both nationally and internationally.
