This catalogue was published on the occasion of Abbas Akhavan’s first solo exhibition in Ireland ‘variations on a garden’. Akhavan’s practice ranges from site-specific ephemeral installations to drawing, sculpture, video, and performance. The sculptural installation ‘study for a monument’ (2013–2016) presents a series of bronze plants laid out on white cotton bed sheets across the downstairs gallery floor. These are the forms of native and endemic plant species from the area in and around the rivers Tigris and Euphrates, in present-day Iraq.

Comprising texts by Francisco-Fernando Granados and curator Georgina Jackson, as well as installation photographs from the exhibition, the publication’s structure is cognisant of the relationship of the artist’s work to the written word and reflects the green/blue patina that emerges from the botanical bronze forms of the exhibition’s central work ‘study for a monument’.
